Who Are We?

The Shinbukan is a professional source of authentic classical martial arts and sciences. Our traditions are rooted in classical Japanese martial arts through Sogobudo (comprehensive martial arts), but we draw developmental constructs from the latest in modern education, social psychology and human biomechanics research. Our senior instructors have earned Menkyo Shidoin Instructor Licensures after having completed a rigorous two-year graduate school-level training program in martial sciences beyond the typical black belt grades including ongoing specialized technical training.

The dojo director (kancho) is Dr. Michael J. Dunphy, a 38-year veteran of the martial arts. Over the years, Dr. Dunphy has earned advanced grades & licensure in percussion, grappling and weaponry arts, and he has an impressive resume of accomplishments in national & international teaching, certifications and competitions. In addition to his martial accomplishments, Dr. Dunphy has earned 3 college degrees, including a Master's degree in Chemistry from Youngstown State University and a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Biochemistry from the University of Akron. Dr. Dunphy is a tenured Professor of Biochemistry at Walsh University and he is currently CEO of Cutting Edge Resource Group where he does professional speaking, corporate training, keynote speeches and specialized programs for corporations and universities across the United States and in Canada. Dr. Dunphy brings a wealth of leadership, martial and personal development experience to the Shinbukan, and he has earned a national reputation as an outstanding teacher and mentor.

The Shinbukan is directly connected to the International Sogobudo Federation and the International Bukijutsu Federation through its affiliation with the Seishinkan International. The Seishinkan is under the leadership of John Viol, a Menkyo Kaiden licensed professional martial instructor. Viol Shihan has an impressive and extensive resume of accomplishment in classical martial sciences (see his website link later) and over 40 years of experience training and teaching. In addition to his official duties as Director of the Seishinkan and a leader in the international classical martial community, Viol Shihan serves as the technical consultant for the Shinbukan and as the Director of the Ohio Sogobudo Group (OSG-1).

Dr. Dunphy is also the State of Ohio Director for the
United States Sogobudo Federation, a member of the International Sogobudo Federation
